Responsible Gold

Responsibility at every decision.

Our intended approach connects lawful origin and transparent relationships with a practical question: how can an opportunity create lasting value for the people and places involved?

01

Origin & traceability

Seek documentation of origin, ownership, export permissions and chain of custody. Review discrepancies and establish clear escalation routes before a transaction progresses. The aim is to understand the route a material has taken, the parties who have handled it and the evidence supporting that account.

02

People & communities

Consider worker welfare, human rights, local livelihoods and the interests of affected communities. Engagement should be meaningful and proportionate to the opportunity. Understanding local priorities early can inform project design, highlight concerns and help identify realistic ways for people and businesses to participate.

03

Environment & development

Assess environmental impacts and relevant permitting requirements. Project planning should consider water, land, waste, rehabilitation and the capacity of proposed partners to manage those responsibilities. Environmental considerations belong in the assessment of an opportunity and in the resources required to develop it responsibly.

04

Integrity & accountability

Apply risk-based counterparty checks and review applicable sanctions, anti-money-laundering and anti-bribery requirements with qualified advisers. Responsibilities should be clear, material questions recorded and unresolved concerns addressed before proceeding. These principles guide the platform we are developing; they do not represent an audited compliance programme or certification.

05

Local value, made practical

Our purpose includes exploring how more value can be created and retained within African countries. For each opportunity, that means asking concrete questions about local procurement, technical skills, employment, processing and supporting services. The appropriate commitments depend on the project and its partners. As projects mature, we intend to define responsibilities and review progress against agreed, relevant measures.

06

Progress that can be explained

An ambition becomes useful when people understand what is proposed, what has been assessed and what still needs to happen. We aim to keep those distinctions clear as opportunities develop, and to support future statements about progress with appropriate records. A credible account of development should be specific to the place, the project and the stage reached.
